Local Hotels/Taverns

This project is being undertaken by David Prest. If you know anything of the tavern/hotel history of the Tea Tree Gully area and are interested in helping David he would appreciate it!

David is new to this sort of research but has been given a great start by Carole Simmonds who has provided a list of hotels and their early licence details and other valuable information.

Most of the original hotels of the district are still operating and therefore the history of each should be relatively easy to trace.  However, two of the earliest hotels were only licenced for a year or two and the buildings are long gone.  So David is particularly interested in any information that may be available regarding the Harp Inn and the Shepherds’ Rest. Both of these were located near the junction of the Main North East Road and what we now know as Tolleys Road, the Harp on the norther side and the other on the south western side.

Please contact David directly at [email protected] or contact the Tea Tree Gully & District Historical Society via PO Box 153 Surrey Downs SA 5126, or alternatively you can contact the Tea Tree Gully Library.
